50th Anniversary of Sociology's Ph.D. Program
The UCSB Sociology Department just turned FIFTY! Our PhD program was founded during the 1964-65 academic year – at the peak of the U.S. civil rights movement. We celebrated this milestone by hosting a series of intellectual and social events in 2014 and 2015. The first was a reception at the Press Club wine bar in San Francisco on the occasion of the 2014 annual conference of the American Sociology Association. We also marked our golden anniversary at the 2015 All Gaucho Reunion, where talks by a panel of distinguished Sociology faculty members were followed by an outdoor lunch overlooking the UCSB lagoon. In February 2015, a two-day conference at UCSB showcased research by our faculty and PhD alumni. Each of seven thematic sessions focused on a sociological subfield in whose development UCSB sociologists played a significant generative role. Kicking off the conference was a panel of former Department Chairs who reflected on 50 years of UCSB Sociology. A conference program is available here https://ucsbsocalumni.wordpress.com/ucsb-conference/schedule/.
