Meaning & Measurement Mini-Conference

The first ASA mini-conference on meaning and measurement was held at George Mason University in 1995. Mark Jacobs was the organizer and Ann Swidler, chair of the newly formed meaning and measurement network of the ASA Culture Section, served as the convener. The conference was lively and the topic was fresh. Since that time the field has blossomed with a huge array of innovative new projects and empirical studies. It is time for us to stop and take stock. There are a number of issues that can profitably be considered in a collective setting.

What is the state of the art as of today? What are the main principles that unite the work? What are the main problems that need to be solved? What are the next steps that need to be taken?

Come join us at the second ASA Culture Section Meaning and Measurement Mini-conference on August 20, 2003 at Emory University in Atlanta, the day after the ASA meeting ends in that city. The conference organizers are John Mohr and Timothy Dowd.
