Course
Description
Soc 142 is a lecture course that is usually taught two times each year,
in the summer and fall quarters. Because summer session is only 6 weeks
long, and fall is 10 weeks, the two courses differ slightly. However, in
both classes, the readings consist of one text book and a collection of
xeroxed readings (which students purchase at the Alternative Copy Shop
in Isla Vista). Fall and Summer quarter are described under the next two
red captions.

Fall quarter:
Soc 142 often has 270 to 280 students in fall quarter, and it is taught
in Broida 1610. There are three midterms and a final, but no papers. The
first pass for enrolling in the class is restricted to sociology majors;
but if you want the class and cannot obtain it in your first pass, you
can see John in his office and ask to be put on his wait
list.
Summer quarter:
Because summer session is only six weeks long, there are only two midterms,
one final and no papers in summer session. The summer class tends to vary
from 40 to 60 students, so if you like a smaller classroom experience,
summer has its benefits. On the other hand, there is a fair amount of reading
and lecture material covered in a 6 week period (that normally would be
covered in 10 weeks), so it is wise to take fewer courses in summer session
than in a regular 10 week quarter. It is always easy to get into the summer
session, so no wait list is needed.
