Wednesday 9/10/08

Grades are up for Exercise #2. As before they are posted on the graded assignments page. Molly George has more specific comments for you, contact her directly if you are interested.

Monday 9/8/08

Congratulations everybody on getting Exercise #2 finished! It was a lot of work and very complicated so kudos to you for sticking it out. If you did not have a chance to complete the extra credit assignment for Exercise #2, you can still do so. You can turn it any time up until next Monday 9/15 at noon.

Wednesday 9/3/08

Grades for the first assignment are now posted on the graded assignments page. (You may also receive some short notes about your paper from the grader separately).

Also, I changed the due dates for Exercise #2 and #3, making them due on Sunday night.

Finally, I have secured access to Phelps Lab space for this Friday 9/5 and also next Friday 9/12 from 10:00AM - 4:30 PM so that you can finish up your assignments in lab on those days.

Tuesday 9/2/08

The Disabled Students Program is looking to hire a note-taker for the class. Please contact them at
893-2668 or email: Thomas-W@sa.ucsb.edu

Thursday 8/28/08

At the end of yesterday's lecture I began to talk about Claude Levi-Strauss's work. I just wanted to point out that I do have some of his work on the semiotic analysis of myth available on the reading page. Look for the link to his work on Structural Anthropology.

Wednesday 8/27/08

I went ahead and added three extra reading options to the assignment #1 reading choices (and forgot to mention it in lecture today). I added Geertz, Goffman and Knorr-Cetina, the three authors I had originally included in the assignment.

Also, I have uploaded the lecture file from today's lecture on the lecture page.

Monday 8/25/08

As you settle into work, you may want to check out this page describing the lab computers.

Sunday 8/24/08

Here is a link to the class syllabus (here).

Some basic announcements:

(1) You will need to have a USB Flash Drive to use in the course. The flash drive will be the place that you will store the files that you are working on for the class. The lab computers cannot be used for storing files (their harddrives are cleaned everyday) so you will need to copy your work onto a flash drive when you leave the lab and the copy the files back to the lab computer when you return. The UCSB bookstore sells a 1 GB USB Flash Drive for about $20.

(2) The assignments for this first week are the following:

(A) Please find three blogs that you would like to use for your Blog Analysis Project (Exercise 3). Contact the bloggers and send them an email, asking for permission to use their blog for your research. For information on how to do this go to this page.

(B) Go ahead and take the Human Subjects Training Module. Go to this page for instructions.

(C) Start work on the first assignment (Exercise 1) which is due by 5:00 PM this Friday (8/29/08). Go to this page for instructions.
