Arguments for and Against Abortion
People who are against abortion call themselves "Pro-life," whereas people who believe that a woman is entitled to an abortion if she wants call themselves "Pro-choice." Abortion has long been a topic of debate, especially since the Supreme Court decision, Roe v. Wade in 1973. Today, more than thirty years after the Supreme Court made its decision to allow abortions, some people continue to believe abortion is immoral and should be made illegal. Those who are pro-choice defend the Roe v. Wade decision, but the pro-lifers always find ways to disagree. It seems that there is no "right" answer to the question of abortion, and people will most likely continue debating this topic, perhaps never coming to an agreement.
Some Arguments from the Pro-Life Side:
- The fetus is a human being, or at least will be, so abortion is like murder and that is immoral.
- If the pregnancy was the mistake of the mother, then she should have to deal with the consequences.
- If abortions are accepted and easy to obtain, people will use them as a form of birth control.
- Religious arguments are used by some.
Some Arguments from the Pro-Choice Side:
- Letting a baby be born into an unwanted home is cruel.
- The fetus is not actually a human being yet.
- It is the woman's body and therefore she should be free to do what she wants with it.
