An Introduction to Coming Out

“Coming out” is the term given to the process in which people tell their family, friends, and community about their sexual orientation. Most people do not “come out” as being heterosexual, since that orientation is not very unusual. It is usually homosexuals and bisexuals who need to “come out” to individuals who otherwise not have guessed. Coming out can be a difficult process, and it is often accompanied with pain and rejection, so it is important to support those people who are taking the risks of “coming out.”
