Effective Listening
It is not only important to know how to communicate effectively, but it's also important to know how to listen well. Pay close attention and use nonverbal communication to show you are interested in what your partner is saying. Keep good eye contact with your partner while he or she is talking, facing them rather than turning away, and even holding their hand to provide support while they speak. If your partner feels safe, secure, and comfortable while they're talking, they are more likely to speak freely and honestly. It is also helpful to paraphrase and give feedback to the speaker. Paraphrasing involves summarizing in your own words what the speaker has said. Giving feedback is when you give a reaction or explain how your partner has made you feel. After you paraphrase, your partner can tell you if you have understood correctly or if he/she needs to be clearer. Through providing feedback, you show how your partner's words have affected you.
