Sexual Myths
31. Using the spermicide nonoxynol-9, or condoms lubricated with it, can prevent Sexually Transmitted Diseases including HIV, chlamydia and gonorrhea.
New research indicates that not only does nonoxynol-9 not protect against STDs, it can actually place the user at greater risk of contracting an STD because the chemical has now been found to cause skin irritations and tears. Experts suggest using a barrier method, such as regular latex condoms, to guard most effectively against STD transmission.

32. Sexual troubles, such as vaginal dryness, low sexual desire, or erectile difficulties are only experienced by older adults.
Young people can have sexual troubles as well. For males, these can include premature ejaculation or erectile difficulties. Females can experience vaginal dryness, pain during intercourse, and low sexual desire. Both sexes can experience orgasmic difficulty. When faced with these problems, you should make an appointment with your doctor who will help you. Some of these conditions can be indicative of an infection, so it is important to consult with a medical professional.
