After the Abortion

Emotional and Psychological Responses to Abortion

Healing

Women have abortions for a variety of reasons. However, usually a woman chooses to have an abortion because the timing of the pregnancy is wrong. The decision to have an abortion can cause a great deal of distress and anguish. After the abortion is completed, the undesired situation may be solved, but the circumstances that led to the problem pregnancy may still need to be resolved. These problems take time and energy to deal with. Do not be afraid to talk to a counselor or loved one about what is going on. It is completely normal to seek help for your problems. A woman may also have feelings of depression and loss from the abortion, and these can add to her earlier feelings and problems. The majority of women feel relief after an abortion but some do go through a temporary depression.

It is normal to have follow up questions about recovery and surgery. Contact the clinic where you had your abortion for answers to any questions. They can also refer you to a good counselor that can help with you emotional health.
