Can my hymen break from activities other than sex like working out or masturbation?
Using a tampon or fingering yourself usually does not tear the hymen, but it may stretch the initial and naturally existing hole(s). Some women have one small opening in their hymen, while others may have a few smaller holes that could tear slightly and cause bleeding if a tampon or finger is inserted. Fingering yourself or having your partner finger you could stretch the hymen or break it. If the hymen were already gone because of physical activity, the bleeding and pain would be minimal. If part of the hymen was left after the initial break, this could bleed as well when inserting multiple fingers or other objects.
Being physically active, especially in a sport like horseback riding or gymnastics, can cause your hymen to break. If your hymen breaks during a particularly intense workout, it may or may not be a painful occurrence. Also, if you have ever noticed spotting after a physically challenging day, but were not scheduled to have a period, the blood may have been the result of a broken hymen.
