Admissions to the Program
Applicants must first be admitted to, or currently enrolled in, a UCSB Ph.D. program participating in the Women's Studies graduate emphasis:
History
of Art and Architecture
English
History
Sociology
Germanic, Oriental and Slavic Languages
Religious Studies
The letter of application should describe any prior course work in the field of Women's Studies, the applicant's anticipated research specialty in the home department, and its relation to interdisciplinary scholarship in Women's Studies. Lack of prior course work does not preclude admissions, so long as a compelling statement of research interests congruent with the graduate emphasis makes the case. Applicants must also have a faculty "sponsor"--a ladder faculty member in the home department who recommends the applicant to the Women's Studies Graduate Studies Committee (GSC). Candidates will also select a Women's Studies faculty member as a part of their Ph.D. exams and dissertation committee in the home department. Applicants to the Women's Studies Doctoral Emphasis may be submitted at any stage of Ph.D. work.
